Mucocele of the sphenoid sinus. A benign imitator.

چکیده
IN recent years, considerable interest has developed in the phenomenon of sphenoid sinus mucocele (Lundgren and Olin, 1961). Important factors are the critical location of this sinus and the various vital structures which may be involved by an essentially benign pathological process originating within its boundaries. We have recently treated a patient in whom the pre-operative diagnosis was that of a malignant parasellar intracranial process, and who has shown good response to simple drainage of the surgically diagnosed mucocele.

Endoscopic Treatment of Sphenoid Sinus Mucocele: Case Report and Surgical Considerations
INTRODUCTION The paranasal sinuses mucoceles are benign expansive cystic lesions that occur rarely in the sphenoid sinus and contain mucous material enclosed by cylindrical pseudostratified epithelium. OBJECTIVE To report one case of sphenoid sinus mucocele that occurred with headache and was submitted to surgical treatment through endonasal endoscopy approach. CASE REPORT 59-year-old male ...
متن کاملRapid Improvement of Cranial Neuropathies after Endoscopic Resection of Sphenoid Sinus Mucocele
Sinus mucoceles are benign, slowly enlarging, mucous-secreting, cystic lesions whose expansile growth may lead to compressive neuropathies. We present the case of a 70-year-old woman with a long-standing history of headaches and progressive ocular neuropathy who underwent an endoscopic resection of a large sphenoid sinus mucocele resulting in immediate improvement of her neurological symptoms. ...

Isolated sphenoid sinus mucocele is a rare entity. Here we report a case of isolated sphenoid sinus mucocele in a 9 years old girl presenting with unilateral blindness and without any sinonasal complaints. C.T. scan revealed an isolated sphenoid sinus mucocele which was managed endoscopically. A brief review of literature is also included.
متن کاملVisual Impairment in Orbitofrontal and Sphenoidal Fibrous Dysplasia Associated with Sphenoid Sinus Mucocele
The orbitofrontal fibrous dysplasia is a rare, non-malignant disease that involves the development and thickening of craniofacial bones, causing facial asymmetry, visual, neurological and dental complications. Decreased visual acuity in orbitofrontal and sphenoidal fibrous dysplasia appears as a result of compressive lesions on the optic nerve. The aim of this article is to present the ophthalm...
متن کاملSphenoid Sinus Mucocele Caused by a Completely Thrombosed Intracavernous Carotid Artery Aneurysm: An Unusual Association
Background Mucocele is an inflammatory disease caused by the retention of mucoid secretions within a paranasal sinus. Although rare, the presence of a vascular lesion inside the sphenoid sinus could determine ostium obstruction, thus causing mucocele development. Clinical Presentation An 84-year-old woman was referred to our institution due to a lesion abutting into the sphenoid sinus; she was ...
